The Fairbury Journal, Fairbury NebraskaWhat most in southeast Nebraska and surrounding areas know today as The Fairbury Journal-News has a long history, really coming into existence on Tuesday, August 31, 1965. This involved the merger of the two newspapers in Fairbury, Nebraska at the time, The Fairbury Daily News and The Fairbury Journal. The Fairbury Journal-News then became the only newspaper in Jefferson County.

According to a front-page story in the August 20, 1965 Fairbury Journal, Fairbury Journal, Inc. purchased the assets of Fairbury News, Inc., combining both newspapers into one with Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon issues. The story explained the merger of the newspapers in one city was a trend of the times, due in part to the rising costs of printing plant operation. The story also cited the combination of newspapers in cities like Lexington, NE, O’Neill, NE and Marysville, KS.

Publishers for the new newspaper were Mrs. Pauline C. Nuckolls and William C. Nuckolls, long-time Fairbury residents. Other staff retained who would continue to work at The Fairbury Journal-News included: Clyde R. Moore, editor; Helen L. Green, associate editor and women’s news editor and William J. Ehrett, shop foreman. These individuals were long-time newspaper personnel in Fairbury, with some like Moore also working at The Fairbury Daily News prior to joining the Journal staff.

Until the merger, Fairbury supported two newspapers from as early as 1885. In 1891, there were even four newspapers; The Fairbury Gazette, Fairbury Enterprise, The Liberator and Fairbury World. The Fairbury Gazette, forerunner of the Fairbury Daily News, was established by George Cross, on September 3, 1870, a few months after the town of Fairbury was platted. This remained in operation through lease arrangements with several editors until 1911 when Lew Shelly and Scott Merrell, owners of the Fairbury News, purchased it and consolidated it with this paper.

Al Hammond, a veteran newspaperman, established the Fairbury News in December, 1897. Five years earlier, in April 1892, he had established The Jefferson County Journal, which would later become The Fairbury Journal. Its legacy would continue over the years with different owners and leasing arrangements. An interesting note, which began in 1897 for The Fairbury Journal, is its continuous family management by some member of the W.F. Cramb family. Its legacy passed from father and brother to daughter and grandson. This ended on October 1, 1990 when William C. Nuckolls sold The Fairbury Journal-News to Fred A. Arnold.

After all these years, The Fairbury Journal-News proudly continues to serve its readers, keeping everyone up-to-date on the latest local and regional news stories and happenings.
