Thayne A. Tatro, D.C. in Fairbury, NebraskaMeet the Doctor:

Dr. Tatro was born and raised in North Central Kansas. Low back pain while competing in high school sports led him to see a chiropractor. His personal experiences in seeing how chiropractic helped him stay competitive inspired him to become a chiropractor.

Dr. Tatro attended Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Human Biology and his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree. While in college he also completed a Certification in Meridian Therapy (acupuncture).

After graduation, Dr. Tatro practiced in Lincoln, Ks. At Workman Chiropractic Clinic. Seeing an opportunity to open his own practice, Tatro Chiropractic, P.C. opened in Fairbury, Nebraska in February of 2002. A complete renovation of the old Polly Shoe Store building on the east side of the Square began in 2008 and the new office opened in early 2009.  This move increased the space and will allow continued practice growth in the future.

Quality chiropractic care is what Tatro Chiropractic P.C. strives to provide. The goal is to get patients feeling better as quickly as possible so they can return to the activities they enjoy.

Thayne is married to Misti and they have three children, Cora, Brook and Miles. They are active within the community and are members of the Presbyterian Church. The family enjoys fitness and spends time at the Burkely Wellness Center or the Fairbury Municipal Swimming Pool. In his spare time, Thayne enjoys golfing at the Fairbury Country Club.

The Science of Chiropractic

Since its beginning, chiropractic has been based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Wiggle your toe, and it's the nervous system that makes it happen. Digest your food, and the nervous system oversees everything. Ward off an invasion of influenza, and the nervous system directs the production of white blood cells. Clearly, the nervous system is the conductor of this symphony we call the human body.

The "power plant" or "computer" of your body and nervous system is the brain. So important is this organ, it is encased by eight interlocking bones (the skull). To monitor the environment and coordinate all the functions of your body, the brain communicates with the rest of your body through the spinal cord.

Think of the spinal cord as the "superhighway" of the nervous system. Extending down from the brain. It is protected by 24 moving bones of the spinal column. These bones are called vertebrae. Between each pair of vertebrae (except the top two in the neck), is cartilage material with the pulpy center called a disc. Discs act as shock absorbers to the spin and when healthy, permit normal bending and turning.

The brain sends impulses down the spinal cord and out 31 pairs of nerve roots through small openings between each vertebra. These nerve roots consist of thousands of nerve fibers that are less the 1/100 the diameter of human hair. These nerve roots relay impulses between specific organs and tissues. So that the brain knows that everything is functioning (or not functioning) properly, a feedback loop sends information back to the brain.

The unique clinical concern of chiropractic doctors is the clear transmission of these nerve impulses.

But, obstructions do occur. Stress, toxic evnironments, poor eating habits, drugs, alcohol, trauma, poor posture, and other forms of everyday activities can affect normal nervous system function. Abnormal motion or position of the protective bones of the spinal column can also impair the nervous system.

If vertebrae lose their normal motion or position they can choke or irritate the nerve roots that exit the spinal cord. This can impede the proper function of the organs and tissues they control. More frequently, this irritation causes affected tissues and organs to become overactive. This common cause of pain and ill-health, along with muscle, soft tissue, and associated degenerative changes is called a vertebral subluxation.

Doctors of Chiropractic are the only licensed professionals who are specifically trained to detect, correct, and help prevent the vertebral subluxation. The clinical application of this knowledge is the "art" of chiropractic.

What Is Acupuncture?
(Courtesy About.com)

Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called "qi", that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in the glow of qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins.

Acupuncturists insert needles into specified points along meridian lines to influence the restore balance to the flow of qi. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points on the body.

In 1997, acupuncture needles were reclassified from "experimental" to "medical device" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement in the same year endorsing acupuncture for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as post-operative pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel sydrome.

Acupuncture is one of the best known of the alternative therapies. The FDA estimates that people in the United States spend more than $500 million annually on acupuncture treatments. Many people have insurance coverage for acupuncture.

How Acupuncture Works

There are numerous theories about how acupuncture works. Some of them are:

  • acupuncture stimulates the release of pain-relieving endorphins
  • acupuncture influences the release of neurotransmitters, substances that transmit nerve impulses to the brain
  • acupuncture influences the autonomic nervous system
  • acupuncture stimulates circulation
  • acupuncture influences the electrical currents of the body

Conditions Treatment By Acupuncture

  • migraines and tension headaches
  • sinusitis
  • common cold
  • addictions, quit smoking
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • Meniere's disease
  • tennis elbow
  • sciatica

Testimonials

Robyn

I've been going to chiropractors for the last 26 years. There's much to be said about finding the right one for you. Doctor Tatro was the first one to make adjustments for ALL of my aches and pains. In fact, "Tatro Day" is my favorite day of the week, no matter what day my appointment is scheduled.

Dick

I would highly recommend Dr. Tatro for any muscular conditions or ailments of the neck, shoulders, back or spinal column. There have been many times when I have been in a great amout of pain in these areas. After being treated by Dr. Tatro, I came out of his office feeling like a new person. Even though I am 70 years old, his treatments and adjustments have allowed me to fish, golf and do farm chores without pain on a daily basis, just as if I would be many years younger.
Thanks Dr. Tatro, You Are The Best.

Steve and Angela

Our 4 year old had a stuttering problem and was becoming very frustrated and embarrassed. After researching Chiropractic care for children we were convinced that it may improve it. After three treatments the stuttering was gone! Now he asks daily if he can go get his back rubbed by Dr. Tatro! We are amazed how much chiropractic can help with overall health, not just back pain.
